Can I Have Legacy and New Messages Running on the Same Web Page?

Learn how Legacy and New Messages work together, what to expect if both are live, and why pausing old messages avoids conflicts.

Updated this week

Quick Summary

One of the great things about the upgraded Triptease Messages platform is that you can run Legacy and New Messages side by side. This makes it easy to test the new experience without switching everything over right away. For the best results, we recommend pausing any messages you’re replacing.

When to Use This

Use this guide if you:

  • Are transitioning to New Messages but still have active Legacy Messages.

  • Want to understand what happens if both are live on the same page.

  • Plan to recreate your existing messages in the new version.

How It Works

  • Different Positions:

If your Legacy Message and New Message are set to show in different positions on the page (for example, one as a banner and one as a nudge), both can appear at the same time.

  • Same Position:

If both messages are targeting the same position, only one will display.

    • Which message shows depends on which loads first.

    • This can change from visit to visit, so the experience is inconsistent.

  • Recommendation:

If you’re replacing a Legacy Message with a New Message, Triptease recommends pausing the old message before publishing the new one.

    This helps:

    • Avoid duplicate or conflicting content.

    • Ensure your visitors always see the correct message.

    • Keep reporting clear and separate.

FAQs

Question: Can I keep both types of messages active while I test?

Answer: You can, but be aware of potential conflicts, especially if both messages target the same area on the page.

Q: Do I need to pause Legacy Messages if I’m creating something completely different in New Messages?

A: Not necessarily. If the messages target different positions or audiences, you can keep both active. But always test to confirm they display as expected.

Q: What happens if I don’t pause my Legacy Message when replacing it?

A: Visitors may see only one version or see inconsistent behavior depending on which message loads first. This can create confusion or make reporting harder to interpret.

Q: How do I pause a Legacy Message?

A: From the Messages dashboard, find the message you want to pause and click Pause.
