Using Targeting in Messages

Learn to target Triptease messages by device, booking behavior, and URL to reach the right guests, at the right time, with the right content.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Summary

  • Targeting is what unpins personalized web experiences. It ensures you can show the right message to the right guests at the right time.

  • You can target based on guest profile, behavior, journey stage, and more.

  • Separate targeting rules can be set for every message within a campaign.

When to Use It

Use targeting when you want to:

  • Personalize content for specific audiences (e.g. return visitors, mobile users)

  • Control when and where a message appears

  • Align your messaging with the guest's booking journey

How It Works

Targeting is configured per message and determines who sees it, when, and under what conditions.

You can layer multiple conditions to refine your audience.

Device Targeting

Device targeting determines which version of a message will be shown on Desktop and Mobile devices.

You can make the content completely different in each version, or just adapt the same creative to match screen size and layout.

Device targeting is set up separately from other targeting conditions.

How it works

  • Templates in the Template Library are designed for Desktop, Mobile or both. The "More details" section in each template shows you what devices it is designed for.

  • Each variant will automatically be used on the right kind of device—no extra targeting rules needed.

  • Go to Setting->Supported devices in the Creative Builder to configure which device types you want to use for each message.

Pro Tip

Create a Mobile-only message with no Desktop version to promote specific offers that you want to limit to mobile users. (We don't recommend making Mobile and Desktop versions of a single message with completely different creatives-it can cause confusion!)

Conditional targeting

Specific targeting conditions can be set to define when, where, how and to whom messages display.

  • Select "Refine targeting" in the Creative Dashboard (where all the templates in your current campaign are listed).

  • Then choose your conditional targeting options from the list available.

  • Select Confirm to apply your changes.

Pro tips:

  • Multiple options can be set for each message to apply more precise targeting. Only visitors who match all the conditions will see your message.

  • Many templates come with a selection of pre-applied targeting conditions

Targeting options include the following:

Message behavior

  • Trigger

    • Defines when a message should display. Choose from immediate, timed, on exit, and after a search (Price Check only)

  • Frequency

    • Defines how often guests will see a message. Make it as subtle or often as you like, to suit your style.

Web pages

  • Where (what parts of your website)

    • Choose Property or Non-property page groups (where applicable)

  • Display on specific pages

    • Add a web page group to define URLs of pages where the message will display. It will only be shown on those pages.

    • Select Page URL->"Is exactly" to target specific URLs. You can add more than one.

    • Or select Page URL->"Contains" and add a string (e.g. "booking", "spa") to show the message on any page with a URL containing that string

  • Exclude from specific pages

    • As above, but choose the "Is not exactly" or "Does not contain" options

  • Display on specific page categories

    • Add a web page group

    • Select Page category->"Is" and select from the dropdown. The message will be shown on all the pages in this category.

  • Exclude from specific page categories

    • As above, but select "Is not" option.

FAQs / Troubleshooting

Question: Can I target by country or language?

Answer: Not yet, but this feature will be available soon

Q: Do I have to set targeting for every message?

A: No. If you don’t add any targeting rules, your message will show to all visitors by default (subject to any campaign-level restrictions).

Q: Can I set targeting for the entire campaign?

A: Yes, but the options are different. Message-specific targeting can be layered on top of campaign level targeting for greater precision. For example, a campaign targeted at Germany would only be shown to German browsers, but each message in that campaign could be configured to show on a specific web page.
